Children on safari

children on safari
“We’ll have to skip the safari as it’s not child friendly,” my client said to me during one of our first telecoms about their family trip to South Africa. They were beyond excited when I explained to them that, in fact, that was totally incorrect and they could still enjoy a Big Five safari experience with the whole family.

Children on safari is a fast growing part of family travel and everyone’s getting something out of it. Both the parents and the children leave the safari feeling relaxed and enriched having learnt a plethora of new facts about the wildlife and the environment.

There are loads of options when looking for the best family safari lodge. Many factors come into play here such as age of children, time of year of travel, etc and we are here to help you sift through all the options. We generally encourage families with younger children (12 years and below) to visit a reserve in the Madikwe or the Eastern Cape areas. This is due to these areas being malaria free whereas the famous Kruger National Park has malaria and many parents prefer not to subject their children to the required medication.

Lodges offer wonderful children on safari programmes, which include game drives for little ones, child friendly activities such as cub club, junior ranger programmes, small insect catch-and-release experiences and much more! There are also experienced child minders to help look after the children during the day should mom and dad want to enjoy some quiet time or a game drive alone.

We are heading off on a family road trip in October and will be spending a couple of nights at various family friendly safari lodges so will post soon about our first experience with children on safari.
