Why winter is a great time to visit South Africa

Winter in South Africa varies depending on the province you’re traveling to. Let’s look at the main tourist hotspots and their typical winter weather.
Cape Town is typically characterised by cold and wet weather. We are in the throws of a drought at the moment so there’s always an exception to the rule. Temperatures generally average around 10 degrees Celsius at night and 15 during the day (50 – 59 Fahrenheit).
The Garden Route forms part of the Western Cape so has similar weather to Cape Town but, generally, receives slightly more winter rainfall than Cape Town.
Johannesburg has cooler temperatures of around 4 to 16 degrees Celsius (39-62 Fahrenheit) with low rainfall. The Kruger National Park has a subtropical climate and daytime temperatures are around 25 degrees Celsius (77 Fahrenheit) but nights get quite cool, around 8 degrees Celsius (46 Fahrenheit). Both Johannesburg and the Kruger National Park are summer rainfall regions so get most of their rain November through March.
Let’s not forget about Durban. Durban also benefits from a subtropical climate making it an excellent winter destination. Rainfall is low during winter months and temperatures range between 12 and 23 degrees Celsius (53 – 74 Fahrenheit) but the humidity keeps visitors and locals alike in shorts, t-shirts and slipslops most of the year.

So winter is a fantastic time to go on safari in the Kruger National Park or any of the reserves in the greater Durban aka Kwazulu Natal area. As it’s the dry season the grasses of the savannah are getting shorter due to animal grazing (more so towards the end of winter) so it’s much easier to spot the animals. The warm but not scorching temperatures also means that laying out by the pool is much more pleasant, and with the cooler temperatures the animals are more active so you get more kill sightings.
Cape Town is also great during winter as the famous sites such as Table Mountain, Cape Point and Robben Island aren’t teaming with tourists so the queues aren’t as long meaning you can, usually, fit more into a single day than during summer.
Winter is also a great time to visit the winelands areas and sample the wonderful array of red wines. What’s better than sipping on delicious red wine while it’s raining and cold outside?

Also remember that winter season brings with it amazing traveller discounts such as stay pay deals from hotels (i.e. you pay for 3 nights but you stay 4 nights, 1 night is complimentary) that can save you a lot of money. It also means that, when you initially thought you had a 4 star budget, with these excellent discounts you could be able to enjoy a 5 star holiday as we, the operator, can select hotels offering these amazing discounts in conjunction with each other.

So, with that said, what are you waiting for? Why not contact us today? There is still plenty of time this year to book your last minute winter vacation to South Africa.
