Botswana

A landscape defined by the Kalahari Desert and the Okavango Delta. The delta becomes a lush animal habitat during the seasonal floods whilst the massive Central Kalahari Game Reserve, with its fossilized river valleys and undulating grasslands, is home to numerous animals including giraffes, cheetahs, hyenas and wild dogs.

This landlocked country borders South Africa, Namibia, Zambia & Zimbabwe and is an excellent safari addition to a South African itinerary.

The Okavango Delta is a very large, swamp-like wetland that covers between 6 and 15 000 kilometers of Kalahari Desert in northern Botswana. It owes its existence to the Okavango River that flows from the Angolan highlands, across Namibia’s Caprivi Strip.

The Delta is affected by seasonal flooding which reaches the area between March & June annually, peaking in July. This peak coincides with the dry season in Botswana which resuits in great numbers of animals making their way to the area.

Botswana is also home to the Chobe River & National Park. Rising in the Angolan highlands and then winding its way to the Zambezi River, the Chobe River is flanked by riverine forests, floodplains and open woodlands. Only a few dozen kilometres of riverfront are accessible, either by 4X4 or boat, but the rewards are huge: the Chobe River is the scene for some of the best game viewing in Southern Africa as well as providing a safe haven for the continent’s greatest concentration of elephants.

The best time to visit the Chobe River is during Botswana’s dry season – April to October – when game concentrations are at their highest. You can expect to see large herds of elephant and buffalo, many antelope and classic plains game species, plus a full range of predators – lion, wild dog, crocodile, cheetah, leopard and spotted hyena.

Here are just a few property suggestions, however, Southey Travel can offer various options based on budget.
