La Colombe opened at its new venue, Silvermist, 3,5 years ago. Prior to this it was located on Uitsig wine farm in the Constantia valley. They are currently rated number 73 in the World’s Top 100 restaurants and number 2 in South Africa.
After our first attempt of dinner at La Colombe had to be cancelled due to a sick child, we eventually made it for dinner last night! Wow, what a wonderful dining experience.
The dinner menu consists of 10 courses and each one had beautiful flavours and taste sensations! The menu changes regularly depending on what is fresh and in season.
Half way through the menu you go to a secret room, which is called the Enchanted Forest, for a course. I won’t say much about this because I feel it has to be experienced, but it was a magical and otherworldly interaction!
One of the things I love about these top restaurants is you taste and try foods you wouldn’t in your everyday life. For example, last night I had grass fed wagyu carpaccio and it was possibly one of my favourite dishes!
Your very last course is called a taste test and it’s just that! Your waiter presents 5 plates to you with 5 different taste profiles, namely sweet, sour, bitter, umami and salty, and you have to guess which plate goes with which taste profile. I got 3 out of 5.
Booking a table is simple and can be done either online or via their central reservations call centre. You will pay a deposit (currently) of R500 per person. All their terms and conditions can be found on their website.
Also part of their stable is the recently opened (August 2017) La Petite Colombe which is located in Le Quartier Francais Hotel and Spa in Franschhoek and Foxcroft in Constantia. We have been fortunate to have dined at Foxcroft which was amazing and hope to go to La Petite Colombe soon!
